Human Trafficking in Minnesota Conference
|
Description:
A Human Trafficking in Minnesota Conference will be held on Friday, September 28, 2007, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Neighborhood House, 179 Robie St. E., St. Paul. The event is free to all, and donations of gift cards, gift baskets and cash for trafficking victims are welcome.
The event is co-hosted by Civil Society, Korean Service Center, SEWA, Somali Educational and Social Advocacy Services, Vietnamese Minnesotans Association, Vietnamese Social Services, and Waite House, and the Rescue and Restore Coalition – Minnesota Human Trafficking Watch.
The feature presentation will focus on what has been learned about trafficking from Danette Buskovick, director, Statistical Analysis Center, Minnesota Office of Justice Programs.
Salima Khakoo, CEO and Managing Attorney of American Dream Law, LLCC, will follow with presentation on the state of human trafficking victimization in Minnesota.
Following a lunchtime video presentation of “Hope for Human Trafficking Victims,” Lauren Gilchrist, National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at the University of Minnesota, will speak on “Health Issues of Trafficking Victims.”
Dick Zonneveld, a private immigration attorney from St. Paul, will follow on the topic of “Immigration Legal Issues in Helping Trafficking Victims.”
Vednita Carter, executive director, Breaking Free, Inc., will speak on “Domestic Trafficking.”
Afternoon workshops and panel discussions will focus on everything from Case Management for Trafficking Victims, the Response of the Religious Communities, to State Legislation and Law Enforcement Efforts to Help Human Trafficking Victims.
Policymakers and supporters will also explain current legislative efforts to stop trafficking and teach how to advocate on behalf of trafficking victims.
Representatives of Minnesota’s ethnic Asian communities organizations that currently have programs to assist victims of human trafficking will be present to explain their work and needs. These organizations include Vietnamese Minnesotan’s Association, Waite House, Vietnamese Social Services, SEWA, Somali Educational and Social Advocacy Center, Korean Service Center.
There will also be an evening reception.
